Area Metropolitana Barcelona launches first large bicycle parking

The infrastructure, which can accommodate 100 two-wheelers and forms part of the Bicibox safe parking network, has been located right next to the Rodalies de Gavà station, in order to facilitate intermodality between the two transports.

The place was until now a part of the zone of parking of cars that there is in the station and has risen with the financing of the AMB after arriving at an agreement with Adif, that has yielded the lands. So, space has been allocated so far to the car.

"It is a parking lot without luxuries, but it allows to keep the bike with guarantees, avoiding theft, which is one of the main complaints of users," said the vice president of Mobility and Transport of the AMB, Antoni Poveda. Bicycles can park for a maximum of 48 hours on weekdays and 72 hours on weekends.

The parking, in operation since Saturday, is free and includes seats for cargo bikes, lockers to charge the batteries of electric bikes and a column of basic tools such as a wheel inflator. In the field of security, it has 24-hour surveillance cameras associated with the management company and coordinated with the Guàrdia Urbana.

"I am very happy that the first high capacity car park has been made in Gavà. Rubrica our commitment to the bicycle. We will continue working to promote it with more bike lanes and also exploring the new habits of sustainable transport ", added the mayor of Gavà, Raquel Sánchez.

The first parking of a project that will be expanded

The idea of the AMB is to incorporate this type of high-capacity parking in different points. For example, this summer will be ready next to the Ferrocarrils station of the Generalitat de Catalunya (FCG) of Sant Cugat del Vallès that will open with 70 seats and will be extended to 150 later on.

Thanks to an agreement with Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB), three of 40 to 50 seats will soon be inaugurated at the Pompeu Fabra subway stops (L2), Mercabarna (L9) and Parc Logístic (L9). Two more are also being worked on: Les Moreres (L9) and Cèntric (L9).

But the plans of the AMB are more ambitious. Poveda has indicated that he wants to incorporate one in the area of the Diagonal to "solve the problem of thefts suffered by university students." It also aims to raise another in another in the area of the Ciutat de la Justícia.

"I imagine a large parking lot in Sants station", revealed the vice president of Mobility and Transport of the AMB. Many of these projects will need the approval of the City of Barcelona and also the Ministry of Development. "The management of Renfe is very accessible," the mayor of Sant Joan Despí insisted.

Precisely in this town of Baix Llobregat the AMB is finalizing a pilot test of a commercial premises that will also serve as a bicycle store.

It will be divided into three zones: one for access with a mechanical workshop, a second for 44 seats with a Bicibox system and a third, with capacity for 48 bicycles, which will serve all those users who want to keep the vehicle for longer. "For those who perhaps only move the bike during the weekend," specified Antoni Poveda.
