History of Fundació Joan Miró
The Fundació Joan Miró was founded by the artist himself and opened on June 10, 1975, on Montjuïc hill in Barcelona. Joan Miró envisioned a space not only to showcase his own works but also to promote younger artists and contemporary art. The building was designed by Josep Lluís Sert, Miró's close friend and a student of Le Corbusier, featuring Mediterranean architectural elements and an inner courtyard inspired by Catalan traditions. The foundation holds over 10,000 works, including paintings, sculptures, drawings, and tapestries, making it the largest collection of Miró's art worldwide. It also hosts contemporary exhibitions, cultural events, and research projects, continuing Miró's legacy of artistic innovation and public accessibility.
