The Mossos d'Esquadra, the National Police and the Urban Police of Barcelona today arrested at least fifty people in an operation against a network of lateros that had specialized in the sale of drugs of all kinds in the Raval neighborhood, taking advantage of the empty after the disappearance of the narco-trees.

The detainees allegedly took advantage of their work as "lateos" to get in touch with tourists, especially those who offered drugs, so the police officers have highlighted the opportunity to have carried out this operation at the gates of summer and the consequent massive arrival of tourists to Barcelona.

According to the provisional balance, in the records made during the afternoon the security forces have intervened more than 3 kilos of heroin, two of cocaine and 2,180 pills.

In statements to journalists, the Minister of the Interior, Miquel Buch, has ensured that the joint device between Mossos, National Police and Guàrdia Urbana will be a "strong blow" for the sale of drugs in the Raval and will allow "to improve coexistence" in the city.

According to the head of the Mossos in Ciutat Vella, the investigation against this network of "lateros" that is also dedicated to drug trafficking began a year ago, under the name Suricat, after discovering that they were selling drugs of all kinds, coinciding in time with the progressive disappearance of the narco-trees.

In fact, since 2017 the security forces have managed to dismantle 182 narco-piles in Barcelona and practice 245 arrests, so this phenomenon, controlled by a clan of Dominican origin, has passed to "better life" and is already "residual", according to Sanchez

In the same line, the head of the Urban Police in Ciutat Vella, Benito Granados, has agreed to give "finished" narcophones "as a formula for success in drug trafficking", so the network of "lateros" he assumed more prominence in the sale of narcotics: "there is always a market," he lamented.

Agents of the National Police participated in the operation on Thursday, a body that has also provided Europol with the international dimension of the organization, according to the chief curator of Ucrif in Catalonia, Emilio de la Calle.

The command of the National Police has also highlighted that in this operation they have also developed a specific role on the situation of the detainees to check if they have residence permits in order, since most are of Pakistani origin.
