The company name, “Desigual” (meaning “unequal” or “different” in Spanish), was suggested by filmmaker Isabel Coixet, along with the motto “no es lo mismo” (“it’s not the same”). The first logo, designed by artist Peret, depicted a naked man and woman holding hands, symbolizing the brand’s free-spirited and unconventional ethos. Desigual opened its first store in Ibiza in 1986 and quickly became known for its innovative marketing and collaborations with high-profile designers, such as Christian Lacroix.
