History of the Sagrada Familia

Construction of the Sagrada Familia began in 1882, envisioned as a monumental expression of faith and creativity. Antoni Gaudí, the celebrated Catalan architect, took over the project in 1883 and transformed it into a unique blend of Gothic and Art Nouveau styles. Gaudí devoted the last years of his life entirely to the basilica, leaving behind detailed plans and models for future generations to continue his work.

The basilica features three grand façades—Nativity, Passion, and Glory—each depicting a key moment in the life of Christ. The interior is renowned for its forest-like columns and vibrant stained glass, designed to create a spiritual atmosphere bathed in colored light. When complete, the central tower will make Sagrada Familia the tallest church in the world.

Despite being unfinished, the Sagrada Familia is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a symbol of Barcelona’s artistic heritage. Ongoing construction is funded by ticket sales and donations, with completion projected in the coming years.
